I installed the new Beta 1 of Windows 7 for a little spin, to live test the new features and see in action the upgraded user interface.

I used my home desktop, running under Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (8.10). Credits go to the hamsters under the hood: an Intel Pentium D820 Processor (dual-core 2.8GHz), 2.5 GB Ram 667 MHz, onboard video, on a Western Digital WD800JB HDD.

For virtualization i used the latest Ubuntu version of VirtualBox, with a config of 1.5GHz RAM and 128MB video, with a 30GB file virtual disk image (.vdi) placed on a ext3 partition.

http://twitpic.com/1192b – Installed in about 30-35 minutes from an ISO image file and it took 23.2GB of disk space. Looks nice, works pretty well, 128MB video set, yet no Aero 🙁

http://twitpic.com/1196k – I got Experience Index 1 on aero and 3d using i945g build-in video adapter. With no virtualization Vista’s Aero worked just fine on this pc.

http://twitpic.com/119ca – The games are pretty much the same as in Vista, love the Mahjong, yet I miss the Texas Hold’em.

In the bottom right corner  of the screen notice the little space. It’s the new “show desktop” icon. I like the new taskbar arrangement, i like also that you can customize it to make it look/feel almost like the XP/Vista taskbar, but I fear that the new windows’ management will let users forget about opened windows, resulting in increasing memory usage and lower responses from the OS. A huge bug/feature is the number of windows titles available when placing the mouse over an icon, limited to 5.

http://twitpic.com/119t7 – Last, but not least, you can still find in Windows 7 the DLL Hell. A bunch of files for noobs to delete and destroy their systems.

Hope you enjoyed this quick trip in the world of Microsoft Windows 7 Beta 1. It’s a nice operating system, a very good one, considering that it’s the first beta, way better than Vista, and it makes me foresee that most of the Windows Vista users will upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as the final version will be released. Anytime soon I’ll install it without virtualization, to test its’ engines at full power.

Soon i’ll come with more updates and more thoughts about this fine Microsoft release. As i was earlier saying to dianamaria, Microsoft managed to impress me in a pleasant way.

UPDATE: Se pare ca baietii s-au prins de mica “gluma” a romanilor si au corectat majoritatea cazurilor de mai jos. Inca mai functioneaza “I use Outlook“, dar probabil va fi modificata cat de curand. Multumim romanilor de la Google pentru micul easter egg 🙂

Azi Schl mi-a aratat o chestie funny. Nu stiu daca e modul Google de a face caterinca de Microsoft si de produsele lor sau daca e o metoda subliminala de a-i indemna pe romanii putini stiutori de internet sa apeleze la solutiile alternative, dar la niste traduceri simple avem parte de urmatoarele rezultate. Desi am fost tentat sa cred ca e un bug, la sfarsitul postului aveti un screenshot cu un cuvant oarecare, sa zicem “Firefox”. (click pe poza pentru zoom, click pe link ca sa testati si voi). Precizez ca “fenomenul” nu are nicio legatura cu browserul sau sistemul de operare pe care-l folositi si ca se aplica numai traducerii in romana (am incercat si traducerile in spaniola, portugheza, italiana, iar alte limbi nu prea stiu). Va invit sa radeti si voi si sa veniti cu alte cuvinte pentru care se aplica traducerea 🙂

De azi, firma de webdesign Panconcept International a lansat pentru webdeveloperii din Romania un nou site, ce permite o cautare instanta a valabilitatii domeniilor cu extensia .ro in baza de date whois a rotld. Site-ul e inca la inceput, asa ca orice feedback este binevenit. Acesta este al doilea proiect de gen al firmei, dupa Company Name Generator, un site care are ca menire ajutarea developerilor care nu au reusit sa gaseasca un nume sugestiv pentru compania/firma/brandul lor.

Astept comentariile voastre referitoare la aceasta initiativa.

Mi-a venit o idee, brusc, sa vbesc despre Ghelir.Ro. un site simpatic, simplu, un mic eshop. Un fel de bazar virtual. Are un umor simpatic si o interfata simpatica. Acum sa trecem la partea cea mai interesanta, si anume: produsele. In fiecare zi apare un produs nou, disponibil doar in acea zi. Dupa cum arata si arhiva, produsele variaza de la perechi de blugi pana la procesoare, si tot felul de alte gadget-uri. Preturile sunt cu mult sub pretul pietei. N-are rost sa mai vbesc, site-ul vorbeste de la sine. Take a look and enjoy!

This is somehow a reply to Guy Kawasaki’s “By the Numbers: How I built a Web 2.0, User-Generated Content, Citizen Journalism, Long-Tail, Social Media Site for $12,107.09“. I don’t want people to think that I have some issues or something with it. I’ve read a few months ago his post about the creation of Truemors.com. I liked the idea, wasn’t revolutionary, but it was a new approach to social bookmarking. Yesterday I tried to post a story from one of my websites and I was disappointed by the upload/post part of the website. It’s a ten-cent app that will upload your entries to a db, put them on the first page, until a “Truemorist” will delete it for no specific reason. Let’s take a closer look at the post form:

• It will ask for your name (no account!), and you can post as John Doe, Danny De Vito or even Arnold Schwarzenegger, no one will know for sure.
• Then you’ll need to fill in the e-mail and you could use johndoe@microsoft.com because it’s not gonna be used for confirmation or anything else.
• Worst categories list I’ve ever seen. I won’t even insist on that.
• The “Headline” … h e a d l i n e … wtf happened to “Title” ? 🙂
• and now… the hugest BS damn thing in this site: “Your Truemor”. Now this is the point where everything gets fucked-up. It’s just a simple textbox . So you type, you enter your story and then you click submit. And then… “AAAARRRGGGHHH !!! where are my links?” Exactly. To insert a link in truemors.com you need tot type the HTML code. Who the hell is still doing this when we have web2.0 apps, WYSIWYG editors, user-management platforms. It’s the damn 21st century.

So, Guy Kawasaki spent $12,107.09 on truemors.com, by doing this

1. $4,500. The total software development cost was $4,500. The guys at Electric Pulp did the work. Honestly, I wasn’t a believer in remote teams trying to work together on version 1 of a product, but Electric Pulp changed my mind.
2. $4,824.14. The total cost of the legal fees was $4,824.14. I could have used my uncle the divorce lawyer and saved a few bucks, but that would have been short sighted if Truemors ever becomes worth something.
3. $399. I paid LogoWorks $399 to design the logo. Of course, this was before HP bought the company. Not sure what it would charge now. 🙂
4. $1,115.05. I spent $1,115.05 registering domains. I could have used GoDaddy and done it a lot cheaper, but I was too stupid and lazy. [this is a little over $20 per domain]

when the real thing would go like this:

1. $0. WordPress (donate to the good guys there)
2. $0. WordPress Skin (a little donation to the theme creator would surely help)
3. $0. The logo that anyone can do in Photoshop/Illustrator/Gimp
4. $600. You could spend $600 or less on registering domains. [hey, you didn’t buy truemors.ro. it’s only $61 at rotld.ro and it’s a one-time fee. see? bargain :)]
5. $4824,14. I’m not into legal stuff, I’ll take Guy’s advice on this one, but I’m definitely sure that I could find something cheaper even in the US.
6. $190.8. Two-year “Crazy Domain Insane!” package at DreamHost, making me forget about problems like bandwidth or disk quota, downtime, hacking, etc.

A little math reveals it all: without the legal fees, my truemors would cost less than $790.8 and a little brain effort, while Guy Kawasaki’s truemors goes up to $7282.95, more than 9 times my expenses, but no brain activity was required.

As a conclusion: if you want to start your Internet business and you don’t have some active brain cells, then PLEASE start playing Lemonade Tycoon in real life. Sincerely, it’s not a cool thing to show off when you’re stupid, and it’s even crappy when you bring evidences. At the end, I want to congratulate Guy Kawasaki for showing one more time what you can do when you have lots of money, a stolen idea [remember digg?] and no fuckin’ brains.
